What is Exchange Time?
Exchange time is the Statcast measurement of how long it takes a catcher to transfer the ball from his glove to his throwing hand and begin his throwing motion on a stolen-base attempt. It is the middle segment of pop time — sandwiched between the pitch hitting the mitt and the ball leaving the hand — and it is the single most trainable, most differentiating skill in catcher throwing defense.
How Exchange Time Is Measured
Statcast breaks every caught-stealing throw into components:
- Pop time = glove pop (pitch arrival) to fielder's glove catch at the base
- Exchange = glove pop to ball release
- Throw time = release to arrival at the base
So: Pop Time = Exchange Time + Throw Time.
Elite MLB catchers post exchange times around 0.60–0.70 seconds. The league average sits near 0.75 seconds, and slow exchanges push 0.85 or worse. Because big-league arm strength on catcher throws clusters tightly (most catchers throw 78–83 mph to second), exchange time is where the real separation happens. A catcher with a 0.62 exchange and average arm beats a catcher with a cannon and a 0.85 exchange almost every time.

J.T. Realmuto built his Gold Glove reputation on the fastest exchange in baseball — consistently in the 0.60s — which is why his pop times have touched 1.82 seconds even without the hardest throw in the league. Gabriel Moreno and Patrick Bailey have posted similarly elite exchange times in recent seasons.
The math is brutal for base stealers. With a league-average pitcher delivery of about 1.30–1.35 seconds to the plate and a 1.95-second pop time, the ball arrives at second in roughly 3.30 seconds. A runner with a 3.4-second steal time — solidly above average — is out. Every hundredth shaved off the exchange directly shrinks the window a runner needs.
Why Exchange Time Matters
For front offices, exchange time separates defensive catchers from bat-first catchers, and it drives real roster decisions: teams will carry a light-hitting backup whose exchange shuts down the running game. It also predicts caught-stealing probability better than raw arm strength does. For player development, exchange is coachable in a way arm speed is not — footwork drills, transfer reps, and throwing from the knees can carve a tenth of a second off a prospect's time in a single offseason, which is an enormous defensive gain.
Limitations and Common Misconceptions
Exchange time only matters in context. A lightning exchange is wasted if the pitcher is slow to the plate — controlling the running game is a battery stat, not a catcher stat. It also says nothing about framing, blocking, or game-calling, the other pillars of catcher value. And accuracy matters: a 0.60 exchange that sails the throw into center field is worse than a 0.75 exchange on the bag.
