What is Lead Distance?
Lead distance is the Statcast measurement of how far a baserunner positions himself from the base before and during a pitch. It comes in two flavors: the primary lead, the runner's distance from the bag at the moment the pitcher releases the ball, and the secondary lead, the maximum distance reached as the pitch travels to the plate. Lead distance is the geometry of baserunning aggression — it determines stolen-base viability, extra-base advancement, and pickoff risk all at once.
How Lead Distance Is Measured
Statcast's optical tracking logs the runner's position on every pitch of every game. From that data it computes:
- Primary lead: distance from the bag at pitch release, in feet
- Secondary lead: maximum distance from the bag before the catcher receives the pitch
League-average primary leads at first base run about 11–12 feet against right-handed pitchers and shrink to 9–10 feet against lefties, whose pickoff moves are harder to read. At second base, primary leads stretch to 18–20 feet because the pitcher can't hold the ball and stare down the runner forever. Secondary leads add another 3–6 feet as the runner shuffles or walks toward the next base.
Every extra foot of lead cuts the distance a runner must cover on a steal of second (90 feet minus the lead) and shaves hundredths of a second off his effective steal time — the currency that caught-stealing probability trades in.

Elite base stealers push lead distance to the edge. In his stolen-base rampage seasons, Ronald Acuña Jr. has averaged primary leads near 12 feet with aggressive secondary leads, letting him convert steal attempts at an 80%+ clip. The 2023 rule changes — bigger bases (shrinking the basepath by 4.5 inches) and the pickoff disengagement limit — explicitly rewarded bigger leads, and league-wide stolen-base success rates jumped from about 75% to over 80% overnight.

Limitations and Common Misconceptions
Bigger is not automatically better. An oversized lead against a pitcher with a quick pickoff move is a liability, and lead distance data doesn't capture the quality of a runner's jump — a 10-foot lead with an elite first step beats a 12-foot lead with a slow read. Lead distance also ignores game context: runners take conservative leads with two outs or when the infield fly rule situation doesn't apply but contact advancement isn't the goal.
