How Sprint Effort is Calculated
Sprint Effort is calculated by comparing a runner's peak speed on a specific play to his established seasonal maximum speed.
The formula is:
Sprint Effort = (Peak Speed on Play / Player's Max Speed) × 100
Statcast tracks the runner's speed in feet per second from the moment they exit the batter's box or leave their base. To filter out jogging plays, Statcast generally only evaluates runs that last longer than one second to give the player adequate time to accelerate.
