What is Attack Direction?
Attack direction is a Statcast bat-tracking metric that measures the horizontal direction of the bat's path at the moment of contact, relative to the pull-side/opposite-field axis. A swing moving toward the pull side has a positive attack direction; a swing moving toward the opposite field has a negative attack direction. It tells you whether a hitter is "around" the ball (pulling through it) or "staying inside" it (driving it the other way) — a mechanical fingerprint that separates dead-pull hitters from all-fields sprays.
How Attack Direction Is Measured
Statcast's bat-tracking system (Hawk-Eye optical tracking, introduced league-wide in 2024) captures the bat's position in three-dimensional space thousands of times per second. At the contact point, the system measures the direction the bat head is traveling in the horizontal plane:
- Positive values = bat moving toward the pull side (left for a righty, right for a lefty)
- Negative values = bat moving toward the opposite field
- Near zero = bat moving straight up the middle at contact
MLB publishes attack direction in degrees. The league-average attack direction sits around +5 to +7 degrees — most big leaguers are at least slightly pull-oriented at contact, because pulling the ball is how you access lift and power.
Attack Direction in Action: Real Examples
Luis Arraez is the poster child for opposite-field attack direction. His swing consistently works toward left field (negative attack direction for the left-handed hitter), which is the mechanical engine behind his .320+ career batting average and his refusal to strike out. He trades pull-side power for barrel accuracy across the whole field.
Contrast that with a dead-pull slugger like Kyle Schwarber, whose attack direction is strongly positive. Schwarber's swing is built to get around the ball and lift it to right field — he has pulled the ball in the air at one of the highest rates in baseball, which fuels his 40+ homer seasons but also makes him vulnerable to the shift and to soft contact on pitches away.
Why Attack Direction Matters
For player development, attack direction diagnoses swing flaws before they show up in results. A hitter whose attack direction drifts too positive starts rolling over outside pitches into weak grounders; a hitter who drifts too negative loses the ability to turn on inside velocity. Hitting coaches use it alongside attack angle and bat path to rebuild swings.
For pitchers and advance scouts, attack direction informs pitch-calling: a hitter with an extreme pull-side direction can be attacked away with two-seam fastballs and sweepers, because his swing geometry can't cover that location.
Limitations and Common Misconceptions
Attack direction describes the bat, not the ball. A hitter can have a pull-side attack direction and still shoot a ball the other way if contact happens deep in the zone. It also says nothing about quality of contact — pair it with bat speed, squared-up rate, and exit velocity before drawing conclusions. And like all bat-tracking metrics, single swings are noisy; attack direction is only meaningful in aggregate over dozens of swings.
