The dominant storyline of the week: the Philadelphia Phillies ran their winning streak to 9 games and closed to within 3.0 games of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, turning a comfortable division race into a genuine fight with five weeks left.

Elsewhere, the Milwaukee Brewers (81-50) held the best record in baseball despite snapping a streak with a loss, while the Los Angeles Dodgers (80-51) won their 6th straight and own the largest division lead in the National League at 9.0 games over the Padres. The wildest race remains the AL West, where the Astros and Rangers finished the week tied at 65-66 — a division leader four games under .500 with a negative run differential on both sides.

The worst week belonged to the Detroit Tigers, who extended their losing streak to 5 games despite a +73 run differential that says they're better than their 61-69 record. The Colorado Rockies dropped their 6th straight and sit 29.5 games back in the NL West at 50-80.

The Kansas City Royals, buried at 58-74 and 11.0 games out in the AL Central, quietly own the second-longest active win streak in the American League at 8 games — too little, too late, but a spoiler's profile for September.

Pete Crow-Armstrong owned the week at the plate.
