What is Groundout-to-Airout Ratio?
Groundout-to-airout ratio, written GO/AO (or G/F), counts how many of a pitcher's batted-ball outs come on the ground versus in the air. A pitcher with a GO/AO of 2.0 records two groundouts for every air out — a sinkerballer who lives at the knees. A pitcher under 0.70 is a fly-ball arm working up in the zone. Because ground balls essentially never leave the park, GO/AO is a quick proxy for home run suppression and double-play potential.
How is GO/AO Calculated?
The formula uses only outs, not all batted balls:
GO/AO = Groundball Outs ÷ Air Outs (fly outs + line-drive outs)
Pop-ups count as air outs. Benchmarks for starters:
- 1.50+ — extreme ground-ball pitcher
- 1.00–1.20 — roughly league average
- Below 0.80 — fly-ball pitcher
GO/AO differs from ground ball rate (GB%), which divides ground balls by *all* batted balls including hits. GB% is the more precise modern measure; GO/AO survives because it's computable from a basic box score and appears on every broadcast.
A Real-World Example
Framber Valdez is the modern ground-ball king. In 2022 he recorded 25 consecutive quality starts while posting a GB% near 67% and a GO/AO around 3.0 — three groundouts for every ball caught in the air. That profile let him allow a .260+ batting average on balls in play yet post a 2.82 ERA, because his contact was singles and double-play balls. Contrast with a fly-ball arm like Cristian Javier, whose GO/AO sits near 0.60: his outs come on pop-ups and warning-track flies, which suppresses batting average but exposes him to multi-homer innings when the ball carries.
Why GO/AO Matters
Pitch shape follows from the ratio. High GO/AO pitchers lean on sinkers and two-seam fastballs at the bottom of the zone; low GO/AO pitchers ride four-seam fastballs with high induced vertical break at the letters. Front offices match the profile to the park — a fly-ball pitcher in Yankee Stadium is a liability, while the same arm thrives in spacious Oracle Park. Fantasy managers use GO/AO to stream pitchers in homer-friendly environments and to project GIDP upside with men on base.
Limitations and Misconceptions
GO/AO counts only *outs*, so a pitcher who gives up lots of ground-ball hits can post a misleadingly ordinary ratio — GB% captures that; GO/AO doesn't. It also ignores strikeouts entirely: a punchout artist records few batted-ball outs of any kind, making his ratio noisy in small samples. And ground balls aren't automatically good — with a weak infield defense or a shift restriction, a ground-ball profile can inflate a pitcher's BABIP against him. Always pair the ratio with exit velocity allowed.
