What is Max Exit Velocity in Baseball?
Max exit velocity is the single fastest batted ball a hitter produces in a given sample — usually a season — measured in miles per hour as the ball leaves the bat. Where exit velocity describes every batted ball and average exit velocity describes consistency, max exit velocity captures a player's *ceiling*: the hardest contact his body is physically capable of producing. It's the simplest raw-power proxy in the Statcast era.
How It's Measured
Statcast's tracking system (Hawk-Eye cameras since 2020, radar before that) records the speed of every batted ball within milliseconds of contact. Max exit velocity is simply:
Max EV = the single highest exit velocity reading among all of a player's batted balls in the sample
No formula, no adjustment — just the top of the distribution. Because one swing can be fluky, analysts often prefer the companion metric EV50 (also called "90th percentile exit velocity" in older formulations), which averages a player's hardest 50 batted balls, or his hard-hit rate (hard contact defined as 95+ mph). But max EV remains the headline number because it answers a clean question: how hard *can* this guy hit it?
The practical thresholds in MLB:
- 110+ mph — elite raw power, roughly the top 5% of hitters

Why It Matters
Max exit velocity is a scouting and projection tool. A 21-year-old who already hits balls 112 mph has the raw ingredient for power; launch-angle optimization and bat speed gains can turn that into home runs later. Front offices use it to separate "real" power breakouts from fluky ones — a hitter whose homer total jumped but whose max EV stayed at 106 mph is a regression candidate. For fantasy and DFS, max EV identifies cheap power upside before the home runs arrive, and it pairs with hard-hit rate to confirm the skill.
Limitations and Common Misconceptions
Max EV is one swing. It says nothing about how *often* a player hits the ball hard — a hitter with a 118 mph max and a 30% hard-hit rate is less valuable than one with a 113 mph max and a 50% hard-hit rate. It also ignores direction and launch angle: a 120 mph groundout is still an out. Fans confuse it with average exit velocity, which measures consistency, and with barrel rate, which measures *optimal* contact (the EV/launch-angle combinations that produce extra-base hits). Max EV measures capacity, not performance.
