What is Strikeout-to-Walk Ratio?
Strikeout-to-walk ratio, written K/BB, is the number of batters a pitcher strikes out for every batter he walks. It's the fastest single-number read on pitching dominance: strikeouts require no help from the defense, and walks are entirely the pitcher's fault. A pitcher who strikes out five hitters for every one he walks is almost never bad; a pitcher who walks nearly as many as he strikes out is almost never good, no matter what his ERA says.
How is K/BB Calculated?
The formula is one division:
K/BB = Strikeouts ÷ Walks
Intentional walks are typically excluded. A pitcher with 220 strikeouts and 44 walks has a K/BB of 5.00. Context benchmarks for a full MLB season:
- Below 2.0 — poor; roster-fringe territory
- 2.5–3.0 — league average
- 4.0+ — excellent, frontline-starter territory
- 5.0+ — elite, Cy Young conversation
K/BB is closely related to K-BB%, which expresses the same skill as a rate per plate appearance. K-BB% scales better at the extremes, but K/BB remains the more widely quoted number on broadcasts and leaderboards.
A Real-World Example
Logan Webb's 2023 season shows elite K/BB in action: 194 strikeouts against just 31 walks, a 6.26 K/BB that led qualified MLB starters. The all-time peak is Phil Hughes' 2014 with Minnesota — 186 strikeouts, 16 walks, an absurd 11.63 K/BB, the best qualified mark in modern history. At the other end, a pitcher like 2023-era Patrick Corbin hovering near a 1.9 K/BB illustrates why stuff that doesn't miss bats and can't find the zone produces a 5.00+ ERA regardless of pedigree.
Why K/BB Matters
K/BB is one of the strongest predictors of future ERA — more stable year-to-year than ERA itself, because it strips out defense, luck on balls in play, and sequencing. Front offices use it as a first filter in trade evaluations; a reliever with a shiny ERA but a 1.8 K/BB gets flagged as a regression risk. Fantasy players use it to identify buy-low targets: a starter with a 4.50 ERA but a 4.0 K/BB is usually one good month of batted-ball luck away from a 3.40. It's also the backbone of advanced estimators like FIP and SIERA.
Limitations and Misconceptions
K/BB ignores *everything else* about a pitcher — home run rate, contact quality, ground ball profile. A strike-thrower with a great K/BB who gets barreled constantly (think a low-velocity strike machine) can still be mediocre. It also treats all walks and strikeouts equally across roles: a reliever who pitches around dangerous hitters in leverage spots racks up "strategic" walks that the raw ratio punishes. Don't confuse K/BB with K/9 and BB/9 looked at separately — the ratio captures the interaction, which is the point.
