xwOBAcon (expected wOBA on contact) measures the quality of a hitter's contact alone — exit velocity and launch angle on balls actually hit — stripping out strikeouts, walks, and luck.
What is xwOBAcon?
xwOBAcon stands for expected weighted on-base average on contact. It answers one narrow question: when a hitter puts the bat on the ball, how damaging is that contact? Unlike standard xwOBA, which folds in walks and strikeouts, xwOBAcon looks only at batted balls and estimates their value from exit velocity and launch angle. It is the purest public measure of contact quality available, and it's how analysts separate hitters who hit the ball hard from hitters who get results through patience or speed.
How xwOBAcon is Calculated
Statcast feeds the exit velocity and launch angle of every batted ball into a model trained on millions of historical outcomes. Each batted ball gets an expected value — a 108 mph line drive at 22 degrees is historically a home run most of the time, so it earns a value near 4.0; a 65 mph grounder earns something near .200. Those per-batted-ball values are averaged across all of a hitter's contact:

League average sits around .360–.370. Elite power hitters live above .450; weak-contact hitters fall below .330.
Worked Example: Aaron Judge
Aaron Judge has been the poster child for xwOBAcon dominance. In his 62-homer 2022 season, Judge posted an xwOBAcon around .520 — meaning his average batted ball was worth roughly the same as a coin-flip between an out and an extra-base hit. Compare that to a slap hitter like Steven Kwan, whose excellent overall production comes from contact rate and plate discipline; his xwOBAcon has sat near .340, well below league average. Both are valuable hitters, but xwOBAcon instantly tells you *how* they're valuable: Judge by demolition, Kwan by volume and discipline.
Why xwOBAcon Matters
Front offices use xwOBAcon to evaluate raw power independent of ballpark and luck. A hitter with a .470 xwOBAcon but a mediocre batting line is a breakout candidate — the contact is there and results follow. In fantasy baseball, xwOBAcon is a buy-low tool: hitters whose wOBA lags their xwOBAcon are running into bad fortune on balls in play. For scouts, it quantifies "raw power translates to games" better than home run totals, which are park- and weather-dependent.

Limitations and Common Misconceptions
xwOBAcon ignores everything that happens without contact — a hitter who strikes out 35% of the time can post a huge xwOBAcon and still be a net negative. It also doesn't capture spray angle fully in the public version, so dead-pull hitters and all-fields hitters with identical exit velocity and launch angle get the same grade despite different real outcomes. Finally, it's not a projection: it describes contact quality that already happened. Pair it with barrel rate and hard-hit rate for the full contact-quality picture.
