What is Bat Tracking?
Bat tracking is Statcast's measurement layer for the swing itself, rolled out across all 30 MLB parks for the 2024 season. Using the same Hawk-Eye optical camera system that tracks pitches and batted balls, bat tracking captures the bat's path through the zone and outputs a new family of metrics: bat speed, swing length, attack angle, attack direction, and squared-up contact. Before 2024, analysts could only measure the inputs (the pitch) and the outputs (exit velocity, launch angle). Bat tracking filled in the missing middle — the swing.
How It Works and What It Measures
Hawk-Eye's high-speed cameras locate the bat in three-dimensional space on every frame of every swing. From that positional data, Statcast derives:
- Bat speed — the speed of the bat at the sweet-spot plane, in mph. MLB average is about 71.5 mph; the elite tier exceeds 75 mph.
- Swing length — the total distance the bat head travels from the start of the swing to contact, in feet. League average is roughly 7.3 feet.
- Attack angle — the vertical direction of the bat path at contact. The ideal band for line-drive contact is roughly 5–20 degrees.
- Attack direction — whether the bat path is working pull-side, up the middle, or oppo.
- Squared-up rate — the share of possible exit velocity (given bat speed and pitch speed) that the hitter actually transfers to the ball.
- Fast swing rate — percentage of swings at 75+ mph bat speed.
- "Swords" — an informal metric counting ugly, off-balance swings where the bat path is completely fooled.
Worked Example
Giancarlo Stanton is the bat-speed king: he has averaged roughly 80 mph bat speed, nearly nine mph above league average, which is why his mishits still leave the yard. On the other end, Luis Arraez posts bat speed around 62–64 mph — among the slowest in MLB — but wins with an elite squared-up rate and a short swing, hitting .354 in 2023 and winning batting titles in both leagues. The two profiles show bat tracking's core insight: there is a power path (speed) and a contact path (squareness and length), and the best hitters combine both.
Why It Matters
Bat tracking changed hitter evaluation overnight. Bat speed correlates strongly with slugging and predicts future power better than past home run totals, which makes it a scouting and fantasy goldmine — a hitter adding 2 mph of bat speed in a season is a genuine breakout signal. Front offices use swing length and attack angle to identify fixable flaws; hitting coaches use them to quantify swing changes. For card games and sims, bat speed is now a first-class rating alongside exit velocity.
Limitations and Misconceptions
- Bat speed is not everything — contact quality and swing decisions still separate Arraez from a free-swinging 4A slugger.
- Average bat speed hides situation-dependent variance; hitters shorten up with two strikes.
- Swing length correlates with whiffs, but long swings with elite bat speed (Stanton) still produce.
- Public bat-tracking data is aggregated; per-swing bat path data is team-proprietary.
