What is Pull Air Rate?
Pull air rate (often written Pull Air%) measures how often a hitter does the two things that produce home runs at the same time: hitting the ball in the air and hitting it to the pull side. A pulled fly ball travels a shorter distance to the fence than one hit to center or the opposite field, and pulled air balls carry higher exit velocities on average. Hitters with elite pull air rates turn ordinary raw power into real home run totals; hitters who spray the ball the other way in the air leave homers on the table.
How is Pull Air Rate Calculated?
The formula is simple:
Pull Air Rate = (Pulled batted balls hit in the air) ÷ (Total batted ball events)
Statcast classifies each batted ball's horizontal spray angle. Balls hit to the pull side of the field (roughly spray angles of -45° to 0° for a righty) that are also classified as fly balls or line drives with lift count as "air" balls. Baseball Savant and FanGraphs both publish pull-side air percentages. League average sits around 16–17%; elite power hitters run 22% or higher.
A Real-World Example
Anthony Santander's 2024 season is the textbook case. He hit 44 home runs for Baltimore despite a hard-hit rate that ranked outside the top 50 in baseball. The driver was his pull air rate — roughly 25%, among the best in MLB. Nearly every one of his homers was pulled down a line. Compare that to a hitter like Luis Arraez, whose pull air rate sits near 5%: elite contact, almost no home run ceiling, because his air balls go to left-center instead of down the line.
Why Pull Air Rate Matters
Front offices use pull air rate to separate *sustainable* power from fluky power. A hitter with a high HR/FB rate but a low pull air rate is a regression candidate — homers to center and the opposite gap don't repeat. A hitter with a rising pull air rate and ordinary results is a breakout candidate, which is exactly how fantasy players identified breakout seasons from hitters like Cal Raleigh. In DFS, pull air rate against a pull-friendly park (short porch in right for a lefty, e.g. Yankee Stadium) is one of the strongest single predictors of home run upside.
Limitations and Misconceptions
Pull air rate says nothing about how *hard* the ball is hit — a 92 mph pulled fly ball is a routine out. It must be paired with exit velocity and barrel rate. It's also a skill that can be *over*-optimized: hitters who sell out for pull-side air often see their batting average collapse as defenses shift and pitchers attack the outer half. And it's not the same as pull rate, which counts grounders — pulled grounders are outs, not assets.
